Various US states recognize two-year apprenticeship programs that are federally approved. Instructional Design Group will work with your company to draft a course outline and support to submit documents. Derek Duval, P.E., DBIA, MSc.FPE is a registered professional engineer (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering and Fire/Life Safety Code Expert. He built his experience in Fire Protection Engineering from a diverse background. He has experience in the development of national codes and standards, design and review fire protection systems (including but not limited to; fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, smoke control systems, fire-rated construction systems), installation oversight of fire protection/alarm systems, hazard assessment and risk analysis, and special hazard knowledge. Mr. Duval holds a B.S in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. in Fire Protection Engineering from WPI.

Paul J. Inferrera, SET has an extensive background consisting of combined experience in the fire protection and fire detection and alarm industries. He was a member of the Ship’s Special Fire Fighting team while serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Kittyhawk (CV-63). While working at Wal-Mart’s Regional Distribution Center, he served as Fire Brigade Chief, and continued in the fire alarm and suppression field by working as CCTV/security installation and service technician. And more recently as a Systems Design and Project Manager in the fire alarm and suppression industry, and also created Fire Alarm Systems Training at Cape Fear Community College. Curriculum includes regular semester classes and two-, and four-year federally recognized apprenticeship programs. Paul is currently the Design Manager at DrawFire, LLC and a Training Solutions Consultant with Instructional Design Group, LLC. Paul is also a NICET Ambassador, past Chair on the NICET Board of Governors; and qualifications include NICET Level IV, Fire Alarm Systems and NICET Level II, Special Hazard Suppression Systems.

David Lowrey serves as Chief Fire Marshal with the City of Boulder Fire Rescue in Boulder, Colorado. Lowrey has been with Boulder Fire for 28 years. Prior to his appointment to the position of Division Chief/Fire Marshal, he served eight years as the department’s Fire Protection Engineer. He oversees the Community Risk Reduction Division including code enforcement, building construction, life safety education, and fire investigations. David has extensive experience in plan review as well as inspecting and acceptance testing of fire protection systems. David currently serves as a principal member on NFPA 13 technical committee for installation as well as NFPA 13 correlating committee.

Steve Markason formed Teton Wildfire Mitigation Team LLC after working for the U.S. Forest Service for 27 years. Steve retired as the North Zone Division Chief (FMO) on the Bridger-Teton Forest in 2020 and held several fire management positions during his tenure with the Forest. As TWMT LLC Principal, Steve has carried his experience forward working with homeowners, HOAs, Guest Ranches, and Fire Departments. He is an independent contractor with Coalitions and Collaboratives and IDG/NFPA, teaching mitigation courses nationwide. Steve values his relationships with community stakeholders, homeowners, natural resource managers, and government cooperators at all levels.

Robert Ray a master electrician with 25+ years of experience, has worked across the US and even Antarctica. Starting as an apprentice on the East Coast, he honed his skills on diverse projects, from hospitals to custom homes. During the 2008 recession, he transitioned to corporate work at Microsoft, rising to Project Manager. Seeking adventure, he became Station Electrical Foreman at McMurdo Station in Antarctica, where he revamped electrical safety standards. Now in Montana, he combines his hands-on expertise with teaching, mentoring aspiring electricians as a certified educator.
